The Shawnee Mission Girls’ varsity lacrosse team won the Omaha Spring Fever Lacrosse Tournament in Omaha, Neb. on Saturday, March 29. The team won their first two games of the tournament, which sent them to the championship game. The team beat Lee’s Summit West (LSW) 8-2 for the victory.

“We didn’t really know what the competition would be like once we got up there but it turned out to not be that bad,” junior Margaret Krause said. “I don’t know what it was but I had this gut feeling that we were going to play great.”

The team traveled together to Omaha on Friday, March 29 and spent the night at a hotel. The team’s first game was the next day against LSW. This was the first game of the team’s season and they beat LSW 12-2. The team’s next game was against the Blue Valley Titans, which they beat 12-0.

“It felt good to see that our early season preparation paid off, but it was also nice to beat local teams because we now know how to play them during the season,” senior Cicely Krebill said.

Because a team had dropped out of the tournament, LSW had brought enough players to field two teams. So the SM Girls’ Lacrosse met up with LSW again for the championship game. Although the team had a rocky start with LSW scoring the first goal, the Shawnee Mission Girls’ Lacrosse team took back control of the game to eventually win 8-2.

“It was stressful [during the beginning of the championship game],” freshman Callie Eldred said. “But once we got the first goal, we got more comfortable. We just had to relax and maintain possession.”

The team relied on the freshmen on the team to propel them to victory. Eldred, a freshman at Kansas City Christian School, was the leading scorer for the team at the tournament with nine goals overall. Freshman Ashton Hess from SM Northwest had the second highest amount of goals scored overall with six.

The team will play their first game of the regular season on Tuesday, April 1 against St. Teresa’s Academy (STA). The varsity will play at 4:30 p.m. at STA with the junior varsity playing at 6 p.m.

“STA has an amazing team this year,” Krause said. “I am more than excited to play them and I believe that we can win against them. We just need to keep up the momentum and have confidence that we can do it.”
