The girls’ lacrosse team is motivated going into this 2014 season. After a couple years of girls lacrosse being offered at East, the team is picking up several new players and a new coach.
Kevin Krause, East’s new coach is making some changes to the program and poining the team in the right direction. Coach Krause got involved with the sport through his daughter Margaret, a junior at East.
“I’m really excited about Coach Krause coaching us this year beause we are going to be more focused during practice, which will hopefully transfer to some more wins for us,” junior Molly Gasperi said.
Members of the team, like senior Cicely Krebill, have had the chance to work with Coach Krause on summer teams.
“He’s great,” Krebill said. “I’m ready for the season to start and to continue growing as a team.”
“We decided to form a new board and rebrand the team, Shawnee Mission Girls Lacrossse Club, to model after the success of Blue Valley High School club” Coach Krause said. “This club can include high school students all around the Shawnee Mission area.The team now has players from SM South, East, SM Northwest and even [Bishop] Miege, Kansas City Christian, Park Hill South and St. James [Academy].
In addition to the new program, the parent board has been changed to include more parents and with the help of East teacher David Muhammad and the new faculty advisor of the team, word was spread about the preseason conditioning. They have also been conditioning with the help of parent and coach Gary Danciger, who is a U.S. Lacrosse certified coach.
The focus this year for the team is to recruit a lot of players to build up as great a program as the boys have.
“We’ve been reallly happy with the amount of girls that have joined us because every player counts,” Gasperi said.
The team now has corporate sponsors so that they can have the opportunity to travel and spread the SM Girls Lacrosse team.
All around, the team is fired up at the direction they are headed this season.
