Fall Sports Update: Week of October 5

Cross Country

The top 14 boys and girls on the cross country team raced at the Rim Rock Classic in Lawrence, KS on Sept. 26 while the rest of the team ran the Great Pumpkin 5K, which took place on the Shawnee Mission East track. The top 20 boys and girls traveled to Fayetteville, AR this past Saturday where they raced in the Chile Pepper Festival. The boys team placed 11th out of 80 teams; almost everyone ran a personal record. The Varsity girls team also has a good chance of going to state this year if they beat Shawnee Mission West at the regional meet on Oct. 24 at Haskell Indian Nations University.

Girls Tennis

Girls tennis won districts earlier in the season. This monday is the last practice for the JV team of the season. Varsity players outside the top 6 have their last matches/duels against Blue Valley and Blue Valley North Wednesday and/or Thursday of the season. After those two duels, state occurs in a week from this Friday in Olathe.

Volleyball

Varsity got third place at their tournament on Saturday in Lawrence, and they have another game today in DeSoto. Now they’re 24-3. Senior night is this Thursday. The team is ranked third overall in the 6A division.

Gymnastics

Girls are kind of upset about this year, with the injuries and the size of the team, but they are starting to be more optimistic about the rest of the year. Really not much going on other than season is wrapping up, and that they wish they could be doing better than they are.

Boys Soccer

Last Tuesday, boys varsity soccer lost to Olathe South 1-0. They lost to Olathe North West 1-0 last Thursday. On 9/24, they beat Lawrence 3-1. On 9/22, they tied with Shawnee Mission North West 3-3. They have now won five games, lost three, and tied one.

Football

On Friday night the football boys were not able to execute and ended up losing 32-20. They did not play how they usually do which hurt them against a team as good as Lawrence Free State. They are now working on getting their discipline back and refocusing on making a statement. They are also trying to prove to people that they are a state championship worthy team. This week they play against Leavenworth and their goal is to go 1-0 every week. Their goal for the season is still a state championship.
