Fall Sports Update: Sept. 26

Cross Country

The cross country team participated in the Baldwin Invitational held at the Baldwin Golf Course this past weekend. The Boys’ Varsity placed fifth as well as Girls’ Varsity. The top runners in this meet included senior Jack McDonald with a 5k time of 17:08 and junior Hannah Arnspiger with a 4k time of 15:53.

“The boys’ varsity team is looking pretty good this year with about seven guys running a time of 17 minutes or so,” said McDonald. “We’re looking to go to state and I think we’re going to do really well.”

After Varsity, the Boys’ JV team placed seventh and Girls’ placed fifth.

Girls’ Tennis

The Lady Lancers tennis team took first place in the Pembroke Hill varsity tournament on Sept. 21. They scored 30 points as a team overall.

Senior Olivia Sneed placed first in number one singles and junior Elizabeth Barnickel placed first in number two singles. Junior Stephanie Wilcox and sophomore Aidan Epstein took third place in number one doubles. Senior Meredith Shackelford and freshman Joie Freirich took first place in number two doubles.

“[The girls did] a great job playing against their opponents while trying to kill the little black biting gnats,” coach Sue Chipman said. “[It was] a good day for Lancer tennis.”

On Sept. 28, the top 15 players will be competing in the Shawnee Mission District Tournament.

Boys’ Soccer

The soccer team, who currently has five wins and two losses, is playing Olathe East thursday. The Olathe East team is undefeated right now, and is currently ranked 2nd in state.

“[Olathe East] is a very good team, they score lots of goals, but they also give up goals too,” said Coach Jamie Kelly.

Kelly’s goal is to keep the game tied as long as possible, and get them frustrated, then hopefully put one in the goal.

“They’re a good team,” said Kelly. “But I don’t know that they have played a defence like ours.”

In addition, the D-team has two foreign exchange students playing on their team.  One is a goalie from Germany, and the other is a field player from Denmark.

Volleyball

The volleyball team is off to a good start with a great player bond throughout the program. The team raised $2323 in tickets and donations Saturday Sept. 21 during their car wash, the only fundraiser of the year.

Freshmen and sophomore teams are still adjusting to the new players and working to grow as teams as well as JV and Varsity. Freshman Sara Maddox recently moved up to play with Varsity, after sophomore Mary Booton received a concussion and was out for a week.

“We are all new to playing with each other and a lot of us are trying out new positions to figure out what works best,” said senior Savannah Bellem. “We are working as a team to get better and win!”

The Varsity team has some upcoming matches this week, including the first home game of the season. On Wednesday, they play at Blue Valley North and Thursday they play at SME. The team hopes for a large crowd for their first home game.

Gymnastics

The gymnastics team placed third at a meet at Olathe North on Sept. 25. This is the second time the team has placed third after last week’s meet at the Falcon Invitational.

At Olathe North, senior Sarah Gillaspie placed sixth on vault, senior Taylor Bell placed fifth and senior Madi Lage placed third. Lage placed sixth on the uneven bars, and on the balance beam, Gillaspie placed third. On the floor exercise, Lage placed fifth while Gillaspie place third. Gillaspie also placed third all around for the meet.

“The team is doing pretty well [this season],” Lage said.

The team’s next meet will be on Oct. 2.

Golf

The Girls’ golf team is off to a great start. They have only had one official tournament due to the Alvamar tournament being rescheduled. The tournament held on Monday was the SME Invitational, which is now being called the SME Cup. The Lancers won with a total of 346 points, beating ONW by 34 points.

Five girls placed in the top ten, including Jessica Young who placed third, Teagan Noblit who placed fifth, Annie Foster who placed sixth and Sophie Wetzler who placed seventh. It was a solid win for the Lady Lancers.

Freshman Teagan Noblit was very proud in the way she played on Monday and has high hopes for the Lancers in their upcoming tournaments.

“My hopes for the upcoming tournaments are to try to shoot under 85 and try to win state,” said Noblit. The Lady Lancers are traveling to Wamego for their next tournament.
