Choice to Leave the Chiefs

Hope led me there. Hope of change and victory. It took that hope- along with my money- and sucked it all up. It has been the source of disappointment and shame for many others besides me. Now, in the new year, I have decided to end it all. I will terminate my Kansas City Chiefs season tickets.

Deciding to end my family’s season tickets wasn’t really a difficult choice. I won’t miss the drunken cursing of men smeared in bright red and yellow face paint, overpriced food slopped together by old women going through menopause or the chance of a touchdown that the Chiefs never seem to fulfill. The depressing walk from the stadium back to the car after a bad game is the absolute worst part about being a Chiefs fan.

The time of the Chiefs being the pride of Kansas City has long since faded. Once diehard fans, like my family and I, were respected for being loyal season ticket holders. Now people just wonder why we are wasting so much money on a football team that is no more than an embarrassment. I have been stuck supporting a team that doesn’t deserve my support at all.

The firing of General Manager Scott Pioli was an absolute necessary decision. When Pioli first came to Kansas City, he had a great reputation from the New England Patriots. With winning three Super Bowls and having a NFL high record, it is clear why the Chiefs were desperate for him. I still wonder how a respected General Manager can drive a  team straight into the ground as much as he did. Fanfueled clubs such as “Save the Chiefs” had created Facebook pages, Twitter accounts and merchandise encouraging fans to protest Pioli. Many people wore black shirts in order to protest Pioli’s reign. The stadium looked like a black hole!

The new head coach, Andy Reid, is esteemed for leading the Philadelphia to multiple NFC championship games and a Super Bowl. I do believe that he could offer ailment to the dying team, yet I don’t think change will come immediately. I have heard many people say that Andy Reid will bring the Chiefs to the Superbowl or that new players could offer a perfect team. However, just like a wounded ankle, certain things take time to heal and regain its full strength and potential. These fans need to get a grip on reality and accept that success for the Chiefs will be a work in progress.

Reattaining fan’s support will also be a struggle for the Chiefs. They look as though they are taking the precautions necessary to start of on a new foot. Yet for now, I have to heal from the ordeals that my beloved team has put me through. Maybe someday I will consider becoming a ticket holder once again.
