Soccer Team Sweeps Summer Tournament

Over the summer, the boys’ soccer team swept the St. Louis Varsity Showcase, winning all four of their games in the top bracket. The tournament has given the team high hopes for the season.

In the final, East faced a Eureka High School, a team that had taken down East rivals Shawnee Mission Northwest and Rockhurst. East stomped Eureka in a 3 – 0 shutout, led by a pair of goals from senior Ari Throckmorton.

“We really took it to them at the beginning of the game,” Throckmorton said. “We just came out and [scored] two goals in probably the first ten minutes, and then from that point on it was just playing professional and carrying onto victory.”

East’s showing in the tournament has Coach Jamie Kelly excited for the season.

“It shows that we’ll have depth,” Kelly said. “I took 22 guys and I don’t have 22 guys that I’ll put on my varsity team, so that means we’ll have a really strong program this year.”

With an eighteen man varsity squad, Kelly will have four players he’ll be able to call up from JV that have put in varsity time.

The only other East team that has swept the Showcase was the 2012 team, led by record scorer Tyler Rathbun.
