La Mode du Jour: Runway Beauty Trends

Makeup is the finishing touch on any outfit, especially when it comes to the runway. We see these subtle beauty trends gracing the runway, but sometimes they can be harder to “make-it work” in everyday life than the clothing trends are! When deciphering trends on the runway, the most important and first step, is to look for patterns. Patterns are seen throughout top designers’ collections, and range in color. For example, in Fall 2011, many designers had their models wearing navy blue nail polish.Trends for this autumn/winter season are fresh and include stained lips, dewy and youthful skin, and defined yet natural eyebrows.

The best way to break down each trend, is to separate it part by part. So let’s start with the foundation, the skin. Seen on the runways of Isabel Marant, Chloe, Victoria Beckham, Balmain, and Stella McCartney, no-blush, dewy, flawless, velvety, or whatever you want to call it, skin, is the largest beauty trend this season. Even though skin is our largest organ, we tend to push it aside when it comes to our daily routine. Bettering your skin care will improve your confidence, and ability to achieve and experiment with different beauty looks. Skin doesn’t turn dewy in a day (more like three months), so in the mean time focusing on a matte finish is your best bet! Starting with a lightweight foundation and finishing with a setting powder, is simple and great for covering up redness, evening out complexion, and doing it’s job as the foundation for the rest of your look. For cleaning the skin, I would recommend using a cleanser for sensitive skin, like Cetaphil or First Aid Beauty. When looking for a foundation, make sure you match your makeup with the tones in your neck, to give you the closest tone to your face. I would recommend using Bare Minerals Mineral Veil for the finishing touch.

Next comes the eyes. Looking to the 60s on the runways of Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, Anna Sui and Rag & Bone, the simplicity of Twiggy’s iconic look is seen. Doe eyes are accentuated with long, voluptuous lashes, colorful cat-eyes and metallic eyeshadows. To get those lashes to the extreme, I would recommend using Falsies Mascara by Maybelline and then Lashblast Length Mascara by Covergirl. Urban Decay caries bright metallic powders and colorful eyeliners to make your eyes pop!

Think of eyebrows as being the frame of your eyes. Seen on runways of Chanel, Stella McCartney and Chloe, icon Cara Delevingne has brought natural and untamed brows to life. Feature brows are striking, trendy, and surprisingly easy to work. By wearing a tinted eyebrow gel along with your regular makeup routine, your brows will be held in place however you “comb” them. This can mean wild or put together depending on the look you are going for! I use Sonia Kashuk Tinted Brow Gel from Target, or you can go the pricier route with Benefit Cosmetics or Anastasia.

Next come my personal signature piece, the lips. While matte lips are still in, we are staining instead of using a lipstick or lipgloss. The difference between a stain and a lipstick is that using a stain is more natural, longer lasting, and slightly more subtle. Natural lips are always classic, but this season intense reds, bordeaux, hot pinks, lilacs, and berries are colors you should consider when purchasing a lip product for this season. Petal stained lips are a more natural look, and it is best portrayed on the Dior runway. You can get this stained lip look naturally with real berries or beets, or a stain by Stila or Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (OCC).
