The SM East Olathe South soccer game ended on Tuesday with a 2-1 victory by the Lancers.

The Olathe South Falcons scored early on in the first half, which put the lancers behind.

Later on in the first half the Falcons had another opportunity to score, but junior goalie Michael Moedritzer prevailed and kept the ball out.  This save kept the lancers from falling back two points before the end of half.

Shortly after the second half started, the Lancers were able to score a goal to tie the game up. Later on in the second half, senior goalie Frank Esberg made another key save.

“They had a couple of good chances to score,” said head coach Jamie Kelly. “We were able to keep it out of the net.  [Esberg] made a really big save in the second half which helped us.  Moedritzer made a great save in the first half, so our goal keepers really helped us out a lot last night.”

At the end of regulation time the score was 1-1, a tie. Shortly after, the game went into overtime, where neither side really had great chances to win.

“We didn’t have any great chances and they didn’t have any great chances,” said Kelly.

With thirty seconds left in the game, the winning drive came into motion.  The Lancers had the ball in the middle of the field, and passed it out wide to senior Dylan Martz, who was able to pull off a good cross. It was flicked to the feet of sophomore Derrick McClanahan, who played a pass to junior Ari Throckmorton.  With the ball Throckmorton kicked it past the goalie and scored.

The ball barely got back up to the center of the field before the game was over, with the Lancers on top 2-1. Tonight, the team takes on the Leavenworth team at 7 p.m.
