Preview: Football vs. Lawrence High School

The Lancers go on the road today, Sept. 13, to face the 0-1 Lawrence High Chesty Lions,  the winningest high school football program in Kansas state history. However, the Chesty Lions came off a loss to a high powered Olathe South team, losing by 13 points last week. The Chesty Lions were leading at half, but let the game slip away from them in the fourth quarter.

The Lancer offense blew up last week, scoring 34 points, and over 450 yards of total offense. This dominance spurred the interest of many fans of Sunflower League football, including Eli Underwood, writer of the “Sunflower League Blog.”

“The general consensus heading into the season was that SM East was going to take some time to develop in their new flexbone offense,” Underwood said in his blog. “Wrong. At least based on their week one victory.”

The East football program made a statement to the league after winning by such a large margin. This is a statement that the Lancers will try to live up to again this week against the winningest high school football program in Kansas state history.

To make this statement, the Lancers must overcome the Chesty Lion’s spread offense, who has opened up the field on opponents in recent years past. The Lancers must also overcome Lawrence Stadium, notorious for being one of the hardest places to play in Kansas.

“It’s a tough place to play,” said senior linebacker Ryan Carter. “There are always a ton of people at the game, but we will be ready.”

The Harbinger Online will be broadcasting the game beginning at 7 p.m. Follow @SMEHarbinger for updates on the game if you can’t watch the game.
