The boys varsity soccer team will face SM West in the team’s first game of the season tonight. This is the second consecutive season opener that East has played against West. Last year, the Lancers won 3-0.
East is hoping to capitalize on a new fitness program completed during the summer, requiring varsity players to attend multiple lifting and conditioning sessions every week.
“I think it just makes the program overall stronger and harder working,” senior Mitch Tamblyn said.
Head coach Jamie Kelly has been preparing the players for a competitive match to begin the season with a strategy focusing on high pressure offense and pressing West’s defense.
“For the defenders, we shouldn’t even be in the box most of the time,” senior Mitch Tamblyn said.

![Forest elephant vs honey bee. Most people would say that the elephant has the easy victory in this situation but Junior Mallory Wilkerson decided to take the risk and side with the bee for one of the first rounds in the biology class March Mammals Madness competition.
The honey bee created an upset by not only beating the elephant in the first round but also defeating the Flame Bowerbird in the second round of the animal tournament. Wilkerson ended up winning the tournament in her IB Biology class with 82 points out of the possible perfect bracket 128.
“I did get into it and I looked up every single animal, and the how the weird battlefields worked or whatever the habitat was,” Wilkerson said. “Most of it was just applying some logic but [the March Mammal Madness tournament] was a fun and easy way to get some extra credit.”
