Every community needs a taco truck. The trucks provide passersby with a quick and savory meal at a reasonable price. Just like an ice cream truck, taco trucks drive around town looking for potential costumers ready for an easy dinner. I experienced them and think that you should try them too. Which is why we, Kansas City, can’t go on with out them.
When I was cruising the streets of West Hollywood in October, I had my eyes open for something to eat. Then I saw it. Parked 100 feet away was a taco truck, or as my aunt likes to call it, a “roach coach.” I took one more glance at the truck to be sure that it wasn’t just part of some movie shoot. After realizing what it was, I hurled myself out of the car.
Glancing at the menu, I guessed there were about 15 different items. Searching the menu for ground beef tacos, there were none to be found. Guessing it was such a common order that they purposely left them off the menu, I ordered them anyway. The lady taking my order told me that they had no ground beef. ‘NO GROUND BEEF!?’ When I asked why, the sales lady answered back with her thick accent that most people from Los Angeles think ground beef is unhealthy. Which is crazy, obviously if they are eating a taco they are more than aware that it isn’t healthy. But you eat it anyways.
A taco truck is a Chipotle in a trailer. Why you ask? Because it’s like a reverse drive-thru. But instead of hopping in your car and driving to the nearest drive-thru, the drive-thru comes to you. But it isn’t like delivery because it is quicker and fresher because you can enjoy it immediately after it is made.
As I talked to the lady at the counter, she was surprised to find out that I was from Kansas City and there aren’t any food vendors here. Apparently she thought that all cities had food trucks because it is such a commonality on the streets of Hollywood.
Maybe you are thinking, we don’t have food trucks because we don’t have enough people for them to make a profit. But we have nearly 2 million people in the Kansas City metro area. So I think we have enough people to have taco trucks to make a profit and for the people of KC to enjoy.
After a conversation about the necessity of food trucks in cities, my taco was ready. I opened the styrofoam box to find two soft shelled tacos with a mound of greasy shredded beef on top. Yes, grease covered. Try and think of a taco without grease. The mix of spicy meat and the warm taco shell made my taste buds tingle.
Picture this: It’s a Saturday afternoon and you don’t really feel like going out to eat or making food at home. So as your alternative, you wait for a taco truck to drive by your house where you can buy a hot meal for under five dollars. Then you can enjoy a delicious meal where all you had to do was walk out of your house, no phone calls, no driving, just your friendly neighborhood taco truck. Now that is something that I would want around.
