Last week, seniors Bailey Burroughs, Rosie Bellinger and Catie Herst purchased glitter, markers, stencils, stamps, and stickers. from US Toy — all the necessities for card making.
When DECA told them they could do a charity project, they chose to work with Helping Art Liberate Orphans (HALO). The group had kids from Belinder, Corinth, Girl Scout Troop 1967 and a Cure of Ars Sunday school class create cards to sell in the cafeteria on Saturday from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
Over 500 of these cards will be on sale Saturday. The cards will be sold for $2.50 each or two for $5. Along with the cards, the girls will also be selling HALO t-shirts and ornaments.
All proceeds from the sales will benefit HALO. According to hfgf.org, 5,760 children in Africa become orphans each day. They felt it was important to donate all of the proceeds to HALO because the organization provides a safe place, along with food, water, shelter, clothing, education and art for the orphans. HALO sponsors 13 orphanages in Africa where the orphans can make art as a form of therapy.
“Sometimes these kids will paint a picture of their mother, but they won’t paint the face.” Burroughs said “They don’t know what they look like, so they get a kind of therapy through art.”
When their art is sold in the United States, the profits go back to their orphanage. A few pieces of the African orphans’ art will be on display Saturday in the cafeteria.
The local kids created cards, decorated the cover and made them for all occasions. Some even have sayings and drawings on the inside due to the help of the Belinder second graders.
“We really encourage people to come,” Burroughs said. “The more people that come, the more cards we sell, the more people that we help in Africa.”
