Students have a week to finish building their floats as of today. The month-earlier date gives less time to clubs and students to build their floats. To cope with the this crunch, the Student Council is hosting an all-school float-building session on Sunday, August 29. Class floats will meet in the senior lot and have from 1 pm to 8 pm to build their floats. Club floats are encouraged to attend, and food and drinks will be provided by StuCo.
Principal Dr. Karl Krawitz says the move was made because of a number of scheduling conflicts. Jewish holidays take up a bulk of late September, creating an awkward football schedule to work around. The week of homecoming, Lancer Day’s former home on the calendar, was already one of the busiest weeks of the year. With testing and college night on Wednesday and the end of the quarter on Friday, the week of homecoming is already one of the busiest weeks of the year. Adding Lancer Day, the Thursday of that week would also be eliminated. Instead of trying to cram so much into that week, Krawitz and other staff members decided it was best to move Lancer Day up in the year.
“Everybody felt comfortable giving [the earlier date] a shot,” Krawitz said.
Whether or not the September Lancer Day will be permanent is undecided. There are similar problems next year with religious holidays, but Krawitz said it is too early to tell what next year will have in store. He thinks the change this year will be positive.
“Everyone is really excited for school after summer break,” Krawitz said. “Lancer Day adds even more excitement.”
