Open Door Email from Mr. Haney

In an email sent to all students on Feb. 7th, Associate Principal Britt Haney warned students against propping doors open because of safety concerns. Ever since the Sandy Hook shooting, the district has taken steps to increase security. The school is now cracking down on open doors, which could offer a way in for a potential dangerous situation. If students are found doing this more than once, even more discipline and consequences will occur. If transfer students become repeat offenders, their transfers could even be revoked.

“We want to do everything in our power to prevent someone or some event from occurring,” Haney said. “We are just trying to do what we can.”

Haney explained there was a huge difference between purposely keeping doors open and accidentally leaving doors open. He said that every case of an ajar door would be examined and the consequences would be made on a case-to-case basis. Doors are now equipped with sensors that report to security officers when a door is open too long.

Sophomore Nick Gasperi disagrees with the new rule, saying there is more harm than good in the new system.

“It will cause more traffic because you’ll have to wait until someone comes to let you in whether you’re coming in late or coming to school after regular school hours,” Gasperi said.

Now that the new security measures are in place, the last step was to inform the student body about the changes and get their cooperation in enforcing the new modifications.

“The big thing is that we want the students to take an active role in helping us keeping the building safe,” Haney said. “That’s all we’re asking.”
