Get ready for some bearded fellows walking the halls of East in the next few weeks. Coalition, East’s humanitarian and global issues club, kicked off its newest advocacy project on Thursday, Oct. 31. East’s first “No Shave November” contest will run from Friday, Nov. 1 to Sunday, Monday, Dec. 2.

Candidates will be entered into two categories, style and length, and will be judged by some experts in the facial hair department. Teachers Michael Chaffee, Robert Bickers and Nathan Southwick, will be judging the furry-faced teens come the end of the month.

There was a $3 fee to enter the contest and the winner will awarded a Chipotle gift card. All of the participants were photographed clean-shaven in Mr. Mu’s room the day the contest began, to ensure fair results.

All funds from the contestants will be donated to Doctors Without Borders, an organization that sends medical personnel to war-torn areas all around the world.

“In many third world countries people die everyday of diseases that can easily be prevented or cured with the right treatment,” said junior Carolyn Wassmer, an executive board member of Coalition Club.

Senior James Fink will be attempting to grow out his beard for the style category of the competition.

“I do not have the best facial hair in the world but hopefully it will be better than last year,” Fink said.

English and history teacher Bickers is excited to judge the competition because it is bringing awareness to issues that the school doesn’t normally recognize.

“Using these sort of sideway-ways to get people to understand that the other illnesses out there that we need to get people talking about,” Bickers said.
