Lancer Mascot in Decline

The parents were in the stands. The students were checking their phones. The players were warming up. But something was missing: the Lancer.

Normally a staple at any sporting event, East’s mascot, hasn’t been seen that often this past year. Pep Club sponsor Jennifer Davis says that because of the qualifications needed to be the mascot, it’s hard to find people who will take the job. As a mascot, not only must students exhibit enthusiasm and energy, but they must be at least six feet tall and wear size 12 shoes.

“The thing that gets us more than anything is the shoes,” Davis said. “We don’t have any other size so if they’re not size 12 and over six foot, they can’t wear it.”

Davis says that another problem involving the search for a mascot, is the lack of dedication. Students will volunteer to be the mascot but after a couple games, they’ll no longer sign up.

“[Students will] do it maybe once or twice and then say they don’t want to do it again,” Davis said. “It’s hot and you do have to walk around, that kind of thing. And it’s heavy.”

Because the mascot hasn’t been present at games, many people feel like some spirit is missing in the student body.

“I think the [Lancer] brings a lot of spirit,” junior Tessa Djiko said. “I guess we are kind of lacking in spirit without him.”
