Group Begins Brownback Impeachment Petition

STFAn unofficial petition for the impeachment of Kansas Governor Sam Brownback has popped up on MoveOn.org. The petition, posted by a man named Tony Piazza, claims that “Governor Brownback is morally and financially bankrupting the state of Kansas.” As of the writing of this article, the petition currently has 9,195 signatures with a goal of 10,000.

Brownback won the gubernatorial election this past November with 49.8 percent of the popular vote, winning by a narrow margin. Kansans typically vote along party lines, leading the conservative Brownback to win his re-election. This will be Brownback’s second term as governor, his first beginning officially in 2011.

“America is supposed to be a democracy where everyone’s opinions are considered, but Gov. Brownback doesn’t listen to any other political party’s wishes,” senior Molly Pratt, a supporter of the movement to remove Brownback, said. “My main problem with him is that he doesn’t have the best interest of Kansas in mind.”

Of the many signatures currently on the petition, some include messages like “This man destroyed the budget and then passed the blame, we cannot stand for this,” as well as “A governor who takes money away from the schools when he was first in office needs to go. Let’s not forget all the corruption too!” According to Public Policy Polling, Brownback’s approval ratings in 2014 were extremely low.

It is very disappointing, as a Kansan, to hear the destructive decisions that Brownback has made in regard to our schools. The teachers are dealing with budget cuts that are totally unacceptable, with class sizes as large as they are, conditions in some schools utterly deplorable, and doing away with so many teaching positions. I do know about a lot of the problems in the Kansas City area, as I have 4 family members employed. Brownback is a disgrace to Kansas. He should have never been
    re-elected.
