Girls’ Tennis Wins State Championship

The Lady Lancer tennis team won the 6A state championship on Sunday, Oct. 20 for the third year in a row.

Senior Olivia Sneed took first place in singles overall, defeating Lawrence Free State 6-1, 6-1. Sneed’s overall record for the season is 24-0. She is the Kansas state girl’s champion for singles.

Junior Elizabeth Barnickel won the singles consolation round and took third place. She defeated last year’s champion, Madeline Hill, from Washburn Rural 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Junior Stephanie Wilcox and sophomore Aidan Epstein were runners-up in doubles, losing to Blue Valley 0-6, 0-6.

Overall the team, coached by Sue Chipman, earned 48 points, beating the second place team, Blue Valley North, by 20 points.

“Winning state was so rewarding,” returning state player Wilcox said. “Everything came together in the end. It meant a lot because we all worked so hard together throughout the year and it paid off.”
