Girls’ Tennis Beat – Week 2

The Lady Lancers tennis team has had an action packed week this week with matches every day since Tuesday. They started the week off strong with matches against Shawnee Mission West, where they went 11-1. On Wednesday, the team had matches against Shawnee Mission North, and Chipman opted to “play low”, or bring players with less experience. The team fared fairly well for not bringing their top lineup, only losing 5-7. Chipman said that the bright spot was senior Mollie Cooper, the team’s number 2, who won her singles match 8-0.
Thursday, the team had matches against Topeka West where again Chipman opted to play low. This shows that the Lady Lancers are already being recognized as one of the better teams in the state, as they continue to fare well without even bringing their best players. Friday, the team has matches against Shawnee Mission South and Saint James Academy, where Chipman has decided to rest their top players for the district meet on Saturday.

On Saturday, the Lady Lancers have their most important match to date, the district meet against the other Shawnee Mission high schools. Chipman will bring her top 15 players, and she has high expectations as she said she is hoping for a sweep. For this to happen, the team will need a strong performance from senior Mimi Fotopoulos as she will have to face the top player from each Shawnee Mission high school. “I am confident that she will be fine, and right down through our top 15 we are very strong,” Chipman said.

Next week, the Lady Lancers have a very busy week, with matches every day leading up to the Varsity tournament at Pembroke. So far, the team is looking very strong, and after the district meet, a lot of questions about the season could be answered.
