The SM East Forensics team took third at the 6A State Championships sweepstakes over the weekend. A total of 27 schools competed at the tournament at Olathe Northwest. The team had two individual state champions, six finalists or finalist teams and four semifinalists.
Individual Champions:
Ada Throckmorton — first place in Lincoln Douglas Debate
Bridgette Beasley — first place in Humorous Interpretation
Finalists:
Becca Zeiger — third in Humorous Interpretation
Justin Armer — fourth in Humorous Interpretation
Alec Armer and Sam Bernard — second in Duo Interpretation
Megan Gertzen and Tyler Armer — fifth in Duo Interpretation
Alex Ritchie and Josh Fowler — sixth in Duet Acting
Henry Walter — fifth in Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking
Semifinalists:
Malcolm Gibbs and Mac Rehm — Duet Acting
Jackson Bonk and Jack Eddy — Duo Interpretation
Ada Throckmorton — Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking
Karl Walter — Humorous Interpretation
![Forest elephant vs honey bee. Most people would say that the elephant has the easy victory in this situation but Junior Mallory Wilkerson decided to take the risk and side with the bee for one of the first rounds in the biology class March Mammals Madness competition.
The honey bee created an upset by not only beating the elephant in the first round but also defeating the Flame Bowerbird in the second round of the animal tournament. Wilkerson ended up winning the tournament in her IB Biology class with 82 points out of the possible perfect bracket 128.
“I did get into it and I looked up every single animal, and the how the weird battlefields worked or whatever the habitat was,” Wilkerson said. “Most of it was just applying some logic but [the March Mammal Madness tournament] was a fun and easy way to get some extra credit.”
