1. Snowstorm slams Northeast

This week, states in the Northeast are expecting over 30 inches of snow to accumulate in three days. The blizzard will sweep through the New York and Boston areas with near-hurricane force winds, affecting more than 40 million people. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio banned cars after 11 p.m. tonight, and 6,175 flights have been cancelled in preparation for the blizzard.

There is a statewide travel ban in Connecticut starting tonight at 9 p.m., and more than 100,000 people could lose power in the state. There will be similar conditions in Philadelphia, Boston and throughout the rest of New England.

The New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks will face off on Sunday, Feb. 1 for Super Bowl XLIX. The Seahawks qualified in an overtime thriller, coming back against the Packers, while the Patriots rolled over the Colts 45-7. Although the Patriots won by a huge deficit, the victory was called into question when several of the footballs provided by the Patriots were proven to be slightly deflated. The NFL is still investigating this case.

Today, President Obama became the first U.S. President to be invited to attend to India’s Republic Day celebrations. The event celebrates the 65th anniversary of the Indian constitution. The Obamas’ visit will stretch over three days that will include meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This invitation is historic for relations between the U.S. and India, and the leaders were quoted to have made a “breakthrough understanding” on a civilian nuclear agreement signed in 2008

 

4. Coach K makes history

Duke head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski made NCAA history on Sunday when his squad beat St. John’s 77-68. The victory marked Krzyzewski’s 1,000th win as the Duke head coach, making him the first Div. 1 NCAA coach to ever reach 1,000 wins at one school. Krzyzewski has been the Duke head coach since 1980, and in his time as coach the program won four NCAA championships. In contrast to his 1,000 wins, Krzyzewski has only lost 301 games.

5. Sweetheart Dance Coming Up

The Sweetheart Dance will be held on Feb. 14 in the East gymnasium, with tickets on sale the week before. This morning, the Sweetheart King and Queen candidates were announced, and elections will be held in the following weeks.
