Eastipedia: Private Shadow Days

The Private Shadow Days at Shawnee Mission East are available for any eighth grader that may be interested in attending East the following year. The program enables the eighth grader to follow an East student around during a typical seven period day. Shadowing gives eighth graders an opportunity to sit in on seven classes, which helps them decide if East is right for them. Last year the majority of shadowing eighth graders went to middle school at a private school. Of 73 eighth graders, around 50 chose East as their high school.

Eighth graders interested in shadowing are presented with a list of East students that are recommended for shadowing. Of this year’s 49 recommended students, 19 are boys and 30 are girls. The list is made up of junior Link Leaders and it represents a wide variety of courses and activities, including both AP and IB classes. Any junior or sophomore in good standing can be requested for shadowing, but it is preferred that a recommended student be shadowed. On very rare occasions, is it possible to shadow a senior.

In order to sign an eighth grader up to shadow, the legal guardian of the student must fill out medical forms and contact forms, and choose a student to shadow. The available dates for shadowing for this year are: Dec. 5, Jan. 13, Jan. 22, Feb. 17 and Feb. 21.
