The East debate team competed in the Debate Coaches’ Invitational at Washburn Rural High School. The invitational is often considered the unofficial state tournament. Senior Karl Walter and junior Henry Walter placed second with a 6-1 record. Juniors Ali Dastjerdi and Shrusti Mehta placed fith with a 5-2 record. Dastjerdi was also the first place speaker and Henry Walter was the fifth place speaker.
The novice debaters also competed at the Novice State tournament that was also hosted by Washburn Rural. Freshman Joey Gasperi and sophomore Isabel Holloway made it to the octofinals and placed in the top 16 as well as sophomores Nina Anderson and Priyanka Radadiya. Sophomores Spencer Thompson and Nate Paris were the state champions.
The next competition for the debate team is the state tournament at Blue Valley beginning on Friday, Jan. 17.
