2009 East graduate, Matt Baker, won Maryville wrestling’s first NCAA Division II national wrestling title in Birmingham, Alabama. Baker finished his Senior year as the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the country in the 197 lbs weight class.
The wrestling team qualified all 14 wrestlers for state this year, but sickness and injuries continued to plague the team into the post-season.
The boys’ basketball team is on a five game winning streak after Tuesday’s win against Olathe East, while the girls’ basketball team lost to Olathe East in a hard fought game. Wrestling placed 3rd in the Sunflower League Meet, and swimming prepares for state.
Girls’ basketball placed 5th at the Topeka Tournament last weekend, while the boys’ beat Rockhurst, and swimming prepares for Regionals.

Boys’ basketball came off a big win against Leavenworth on Friday, while girls basketball continues to struggle. Bowling, wrestling and swimming continue to prepare for their upcoming season after a long break.
The Lancer boy’s basketball team will play St. James this Thursday, Dec. 6. The game is part of a tournament being hosted by Shawnee Mission East. Boys’ swimming had their first meet Saturday but suffered a bad loss as they were missing some of their top swimmers.
This season will feature the team as a whole with the skill level spread out throughout the team instead of just a few star wrestlers.
Senior Ben Randolph is the latest athlete to sign with a university for athletics. Randolph will wrestle at second-year program Benedictine in Atchison, Kan.
The SM East wrestling team took 1st at the regional tournament on Feb. 18., edging out Lawrence at home. Lawrence was ranked 2nd in Kansas 6A rankings as a team, while East recently dropped out of the top 10. After beating Lawrence for two consecutive weeks, the possibility of scoring higher than the Chesty Lions at the state tournament seemed more likely. All 13 East wrestlers at the tournament placed in the top 4, which qualified all of them for the 6A Kansas State tournament on Feb. 25.
