East Alumn Wins NCAA II National Championship

2009 East graduate, Matt Baker, won Maryville wrestling’s first NCAA Division II national wrestling title in Birmingham, Alabama. Baker finished his Senior year as the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the country in the 197 lbs weight class.

Senior Ben Randolph is the latest athlete to sign with a university for athletics. Randolph will wrestle at second-year program Benedictine in Atchison, Kan.

Wrestling Wins Regionals

The SM East wrestling team took 1st at the regional tournament on Feb. 18., edging out Lawrence at home. Lawrence was ranked 2nd in Kansas 6A rankings as a team, while East recently dropped out of the top 10. After beating Lawrence for two consecutive weeks, the possibility of scoring higher than the Chesty Lions at the state tournament seemed more likely. All 13 East wrestlers at the tournament placed in the top 4, which qualified all of them for the 6A Kansas State tournament on Feb. 25.
