Soundslide: Blue Notes/Blue Knights Jazz Concert

Both SM East jazz bands, the Blue Notes and the Blue Knights, performed three selections on Feb 29. The Notes’ selections were “Come Fly with Me”, “Billy’s Blues”, and “Jiver’s License”. ”Come Fly with Me” was originally composed by James Van Heusen for Frank Sinatra, and has since been covered by many jazz giants including the late, great Count Basie. ”Billy’s Blues” is a simple, down-and-dirty blues chart composed by Mike Carubia. ”Jiver’s License” is a fast-paced, cooking tune composed by Howard Rowe. The Knights played “La Fiesta”, a fast-moving, complex Latin chart by Chick Corea, “Stolen Moments”, a jazz standard written by Oliver Nelson which featured many, many soloists, and Duke Ellington’s “Feet Bone”, a medium blues with solis for nearly every section.

For Senior DJ Burton art is more than just a hobby, it’s something he’s been passionate about for years. He started drawing a lot in 6th grade and has been hooked on creating new pieces ever since. “I think I really started realizing in my sophomore and junior years that this could actually go somewhere for me.” says Burton. He finds inspiration in friends and in the little things such as just people on the street or at school. In this exclusive Sounslides interview, DJ confesses, “Art has changed my life because it’s helped me understand a lot of things that didn’t necessarily make sense before.”
