Breaking News: All-State Band & Orchestra List

The Kansas Music Educators Association announced their list of all-state band and orchestra roster, with seven students from Shawnee Mission East recognized.

Joey Gasperi, one of the students on the list, felt uneasy about this year’s list.

“The results were kind of funny this year,” Gasperi said. “Some people didn’t make it that have made it in the past so I was a little nervous because both the district and state results were a little weird.”

The KMEA Executive Officers are made up of music educators all throughout the state. They come from anywhere from Olathe to Goddard, Kan. Their goal as an association is to foster leadership and provide professional development, as stated in their mission statement.

The process of being selected is highlighted by checkpoints. The first checkpoint is to make it through is the district competition. If the musicians make it through that, they will go to the state competition and perform again alongside the best musicians in the state. The judges then hand-pick the best people from each category and are placed on the roster.

SM East students on the all-state list included:

  • Joey Gasperi- Viola
  • Madi Gray- Viola
  • Alina Kolchinsky- Flute
  • Jessie Peterson- Clarinet
  • Coleman Brockmeier- Trumpet
  • Jason Rhoads- Percussion
