Boys’ Soccer Falls to SM Northwest

East’s Boys’ soccer team fell to Shawnee Mission Northwest, 3-0.

The game started with back and forth between the two teams, each team losing, then regaining possession around mid-field. Each team had missed scoring opportunities. Junior Ari Throckmorton missed a goal, heading a cross off of the left post early in the first half. Northwest missed an opportunity minutes later from a cross that the Northwest player couldn’t get by junior goalie Michael Moedritzer.

With minutes left in the half, Northwest was able to break away with the ball. Moedritzer came out of the goal and dove to stop the attack, but the ball went right under him, into the back of the net. The half ended, SME 0 – SMNW 1.

East came into the second half with a new goalie, senior Frank Esberg, and with possession. They immediately took the ball down the sideline, and lost the ball out of bounds. A quick mistake, and it was Northwest’s ball again.

That’s how the rest of the night went for East. They were stuck at the top of the goal box all night, never able to get off a shot at goal.

Northwest couldn’t get anything going when the East defense was back either. But when East couldn’t get back in time, they capitalized, scoring two more times off of breakaways.

East, now 3-2 on the season, has now been shut out in two straight games, their opponents out-scoring them 4-0. East will be going up against rival Olathe East next Thursday, a team with a history of routing the Lancers.
