Review: Summer Cool Downs

Spending summer outside in Kansas City can be quite brutal at times, so any reason I can stay within the AC without being lazy becomes my savior. So while you’re trying to resist the urge to dump your head in a bucket of ice, here are my three ways to cool down during the hottest days of summer.

One of my all time favorite ice cream shops, Murray’s Ice Creams and Cookies, located in Westport, serves 16 flavors at a time of delicious ice cream for under $10. The flavors usually change weekly, but my personal favorite, Chocolate Flake Fromage, always stays in stock. The immediate scent of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies mixed with sweet ice cream never gets old on a hot, summer day.

While in the area, the Westside, located in downtown KC, is always a good idea for an enjoyable afternoon. One of the perks about the Westside is the quality food. For breakfast, two of my favorites are Chez Elle, which makes various kinds of crepes, and Little Freshie, which has food ranging from scones to muffins to oat bars. Although both places differ in type of food, they both serve VSCO worthy food. After breakfast, one of my favorite shops in KC is Westside Storey, located on the corner of Summit Street. They sell a wide range of products that all correlate with Kansas City like t-shirts, socks, and coasters. It is on the pricier side, so it’s the perfect place to put items on your wishlist.

When I’m bored at home I’ll usually scroll through my Pinterest feed and try and find something to make or do. One of the best ways to cool down after a long, hot day is to get a frozen lemonade, my all-time favorite drink. The following recipe details how to make a frozen strawberry lemonade. With only three ingredients, this easy drink takes just a couple minutes to make. When I make this drink, I usually like to sit outside with my dogs and read a good book, or you know, an english assigned book.

8 ounces lemonade

1 cup whole frozen strawberries

2 cups ice

Combine all ingredients in your blender and blend on high for several minutes once slushy is ready to serve. Garnish with lemon wheel if desired.
