Another Piece of “The Collection”

Written and directed by the same thriller genius behind the “Saw” movies, Marcus Dunstan, I went to “The Collection” expecting another Grade A torture film. But, this movie was soon to disappoint.

“The Collection” is a basic sequel to the 2009 flick, “The Collector” that performed badly at the box office considering it was competing with “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and “G.I. Joe: rise of the Cobra.” Never the less, if you haven’t seen the first movie from three years ago you won’t be confused or missing out on anything too important on the most recent release.

“The Collector” is your average killer for a horror film. You never see his face, he hasn’t been caught and has a creepy background story. He doesn’t have a routine or order of where he sets up his massacres, but they always kill hundreds in the blink of an eye with complicated and mind boggling booby-traps. The main character Arkin (Josh Stewart) made the transition from the last previous film into the newest release to continue his escape from “The Collector”(Randall Archer).

The film’s beginning gives you the needed update on the situation with news reports flashing across the screen along with the opening credits. Elena (Emma Fitzpatrick) is your average young adult planning on a fun night with her friends at the club after her boyfriend ditches her for the evening. The place appears to be your normal nightclub unless you look up and see a giant combine of sharp and deadly looking hooks set up to swing down and murder hundreds within seconds of the booby-trap being set off. Elena soon sees her boyfriend hooking up with another girl, causing her to have to do the necessary girl reaction to the situation — go find a place to cry. she finds a large red suitcase in the room she decided to cry in, where Arkin is still trapped from the previous movie. When Elena decided to be a savior and open the case immediately it sends off booby-traps throughout the entire club. The combine comes down and slices everyone who is getting down on the dance floor and multiple other traps go off throughout the building.

Arkin ends up escaping after jumping out of a window once he sees “The collector” coming around the corner and snatch up Elena. She is taken to The collector’s warehouse where he keeps all of his collections from each massacre. Most of his “collections” basically turn into zombies because they are hopped up on drugs and are trapped in a dark warehouse for months until they die or become a cannibal.

Arkin wakes up in a hospital bed recovering from the scars that the killer has caused him scared to death that The Collector will come back for him and ending up back in the warehouse.

Elena’s father is an important man in the area, so he hires men to find his daughter. Their most prominent source — Arkin. He has been in the warehouse, knows where it is, and is the only known person to get out of the warehouse alive making him the only person to guide them.

The rest of the movie consists of the investigating team and Arkin trying to save Elena from the booby-trap filled warehouse with twists and turns around every corner.

If you are looking for the average thriller with indepth detail and keeps you interested, “The Collection” is for you. You may want to watch “The Collector” first to clear up little details, but it’s not necessarily needed to enjoy the film. This movie definitely resembles the “Saw” movies, but is not nearly as popular as any of those money making flicks. This movie is a good way to keep you on your toes and has the usual crazy people popping out.
