East Alumn Wins NCAA II National Championship

2008 East graduate, Matt Baker, won Maryville wrestling’s first NCAA Division II national wrestling title in Birmingham, Alabama. Baker finished his Senior year as the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the country in the 197 lbs weight class.

Baker’s final match was against Romero Cotton of University of Nebraska-Kearney. Baker was behind 3-4 going into the third period until he took the lead with a takedown. Cotton responded with a quick escape, tying the match. Baker won in overtime against Cotton to win the tournament with a final score of 5-4.
